Common Technical Terms of the Extrusion Process

Extrusion is the most common plastic processing technology, and it is also an earlier type of blow molding method. It is suitable for blow molding of PE, PP, PVC, thermoplastic engineering plastics, thermoplastic elastomers and other polymers and various blends. , This article shares the technical terminology of extruded plastics, and the content is for your friends’ reference.

Process

Extrusion molding is also called extrusion molding in plastic processing. In the processing of non-rubber extruders, it is extruded by hydraulic pressure on the mold itself. It refers to a processing method in which materials pass through the action between the barrel and screw of the extruder, while being plasticized by heat, being pushed forward by the screw, and continuously passing through the head to make various cross-section products or semi-products.

01 Plastic Extrusion Mould

plasticsextrusion tooling: In the plastic extrusion molding process, a mold for continuous molding of plastic parts (products).

profileextrusion tooling: Extrusion molding process is used to mold plastic profiled materials.

sheet extrusiontooling: The extrusion molding process is used to mold the plastic sheet.

panelextrusion tooling: The extrusion molding process is used to mold the plastic sheet.

coextrusion tooling: A mold that uses two or more extruders to form the same plastic part.

front-coextrusiontooling (FCE): A co-extrusion die with co-extrusion runners placed in the die.

post-coextrusion tooling (PCE) : The co-extrusion runner is placed in the co-extrusion die behind the shaping device.

multi-strand extrusion tooling: In the same mold, two or more plastic extrusion molds are formed.

surfaceembossment extrusion tooling: The extrusion molding process is used to form a mold with patterned plastic parts on the outer surface.

low foamextrusion tooling: The extrusion molding process is used to mold the plastic parts with the foaming ratio below 1.3-2.5.

free foam extrusion tooling: Extrusion molding and free foaming process are used to mold foamed plastic parts.

hard surface foam extrusion tooling: It adopts extrusion molding and controllable foaming process, and the molding surface has a mold with a skin layer foamed plastic part.

coextrusion tooling: The extrusion molding process is used to compound plastic and non-plastic products into a product mold in the same mold.

Wood Plastic Composites(WPC) extrusion tooling: The extrusion molding process is used to form a product in the same mold after mixing plastic and plant powder.

02 Extrusion die parts

Die: It is installed at the exit of the extruder to further heat and plasticize the plastic supplied by the extruder to extrude the plastic parison.

Calibrator: A device for cooling and shaping the plastic parison extruded from the die.

Watertank: A device that uses cooling water to further cool and shape the plastic parts.

03 Extruder parts

Locatingbush: The part that plays a role of positioning in the connection between the die and the extruder.

Breakerplate: A porous part that stabilizes the material flow at the entrance of the die runner.

Neck, adapter: At the feed end of the die, it is connected with the extruder and acts as a transitional part of the runner.

Spiderplate: Fixed core or split cone parts.

Compressing plate: A part that compresses the material flow.

pre-landplate: Preliminary molding of plastic parison parts.

Landplate: At the discharge end of the die, the final plastic parison part is formed.

Torpedo: Conical parts that preliminarily divert materials in the flow channel.

Mandrel: The part that forms the inner cavity of a plastic parison.

Insert: Partially formed parts embedded on the main part.

Coverplate: There are parts of the main vacuum chamber on the top of the sizing mold.

Top rail: The parts on the upper surface of the shaped plastic part in the shaping mold.

Side rail: The part on the side surface of the shaped plastic part in the shaping mold.

Bottomrail: The part on the bottom surface of the shaped plastic part in the shaping mold.

Baseplate: The supporting part of the shaping mold or the bottom of the water tank.

Retaingplate: The part connected to the worktable of the auxiliary extrusion machine at the bottom of the shaping die or the water tank.

Tankplate: The molded plastic parts in the water tank.

Coextusion connecting adapter: Connect the mold and the parts of the co-extrusion machine.

04 Design Elements of Extrusion Die

Flowchannel: The channel through which the molten plastic flows in the die.

Extendingangle: The angle between the generatrix of the expansion surface in the runner and the axis of the extrusion cavity.

Compressing: The included angle between the generatrix of the compression surface in the runner and the axis of the extrusion cavity.

Compressrate: The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the runner at the support plate to the cross-sectional area of the runner at the forming plate.

Land zone: In the runner, the preforming section and the forming section are straight.

Pre-land: The gap of the runner at the preformed plate.

Land: The gap of the runner at the forming plate.

Vacuum room: In the setting mold, a vacuum chamber is opened on the non-forming surface.

Vacuum: An air groove opened on the molding surface of the template.

Vacuumhole: Hole channel in the vacuum system of the sizing mold.

Coolingchannel: The passage of cooling medium in the die or sizing mold.

Calibrator cavity: The shaping cavity where the shaping mold and shaping block are in contact with the plastic part for cooling and shaping.

Axis ofcalibrator cavity: The geometric centerline of the shaped cavity.

Haul-off speed: The length of the extruded plastic part per unit time.
